How to make fancy bar cocktails at home

How to make Rickey, strawberry jalapeño margarita, lemon drop

HOUSTON – Local 2 asked the creative director at one of Houston's hottest bars, Sanctuari Bar at Triniti to show us how to mix up some of their fancy cocktails in our own kitchen.

All you really need is three main ingredients.

"A cocktail is going to contain a spirit, a sweetening agent and sort of a sour agent," said Laurie Sheddan.

Sheddan said almost everyone has those three ingredients already in the kitchen. The "sweet part" is simple syrup. Just boil a cup of water, then add a cup of sugar.

Your "spirit" is any kind of liquor and for the sour, look in your fruit basket.

"The easiest thing, what you might have at home is some sort of citrus fruit. You can have lemons, you can have limes, you can have oranges, you can have grapefruit -- you can have any of those," Sheddan said.

Strawberry jalapeño margarita

She mixed the simple syrup, some lime juice and tequila. To fancy it up, muddle some strawberries and a tiny slice of jalapeño for a strawberry jalapeño margarita.

Rickey

For a Rickey, mix one part spirit, a half part syrup, half part lime juice. Top it with soda.

Lemon drop

To make a lemon drop, just mix vodka, lemon juice and simple syrup. Coat the rim of the glass in sugar.

Enjoy!
