SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio could be losing their mayor to Washington.

A source now confirms Julian Castro is under consideration for a spot in Barack Obama's Cabinet.

The source confirmed for KSAT 12 News that Castro has been contacted and the FBI process of vetting his background is underway.

The source could not confirm which Cabinet position Castro could take, but the New York Times reported that the position is for HUD Secretary.

Castro has been mayor of San Antonio since May 2009.

He is close to the Obama administration and is widely considered to be a rising star in Democratic national politics.

His star has been on the rise since his keynote speech to the Democratic National Convention in 2012.

Castro has been a frequent spokesman on immigration and border reforms, as well as environmental and education issues.
