HOUSTON - What do you do if there's an active shooter in your vicinity? Evacuate, hide out or take action against the shooter.
"Run, Hide, Fight" is a strategy devised by the city of Houston in 2012 to teach average citizens how to protect themselves.
A video produced by the city with the Department of Homeland Security has become a standard training aid nationally.
The Houston video has been translated into six languages. The English-language version has garnered more than 5 million views on YouTube.
The Harris County Department of Education has helped put on several training sessions for Run, Hide, Fight.
“It actually adds an urgency to the needs of them to go back to the organizations to be sure they’re prepared,” said Ecomet Burley, director of the Center for Safe and Secure Schools.
The full video can be seen on YouTube.
