Robber shoots woman outside northwest Harris County gym

Victim suffered a punctured lung in attack outside 24 Hour Fitness

HOUSTON – A woman is being treated for a punctured lung after she was shot in the parking lot of a northwest Harris County gym.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the woman was walking to her car outside a 24 Hour Fitness in a shopping plaza on FM 1960 near Stuebner Airline around 9 p.m. Wednesday..

"We saw a car pull up next to her BMW that's over there, and we didn't think anything of it. Maybe friends, but the next thing we know, we turned around and hear shots fired," a witness said.

Deputies said the gunman snatched the woman's purse, then shot her in the side.

The shooter got away in a silver Honda, according to witnesses.

Arthur Spencer was leaving a nearby Goodwill store when he saw what happened.  He ran to help the victim any way he could.

He said the victim did not say much just asked him to "hold her hand and pray with her."

The victim was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Deputies said there have been a several robberies, some of them armed, in the area recently. It was unclear if any of those robberies is connected to this one.

Officials with 24 Hour Fitness said they will be alerting customers and taking extra precautions to keep them safe.

A detailed description of the shooter has not been released.
