Retired HPD officer shoots knife-wielding neighbor in stomach, HCSO says

HOUSTON – A retired Houston police officer shot a knife-wielding man in the stomach Saturday in northwest Harris County.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said it happened in the 18000 block of Harnett Drive near Huntmont Drive.

According to deputies, the retired police officer said his neighbor, a 20-year-old mentally challenged man, was walking down the street wearing a ski mask.

The officer recognized the man and asked if he was OK, and the man said, "No. I'm here to kill you," and pulled out a machete, according to officials.

The officer started to run away and shot the man in the stomach. We're told the man with the machete was flown to Hermann Hospital by LifeFlight.

Officials said the man is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
