HOUSTON – Roaches are the villainous stars of this week’s Restaurant Report Card, popping up all over town.
But it’s not just that they are ugly and gross, it’s what cockroaches carry with them that makes them downright dangerous around food.
“They walk through all kinds of surfaces and they carry bacteria on their bodies, on their legs, and when they move into your kitchen, they bring all of that with them," Misty Sarraf, Houston restaurant inspector, said.
At Viet Subs, on Gessner Road, Houston health inspectors found cockroaches in lots of places.
They reported finding the pests under the food prep table, under the reach-in-cooler, in the ceiling, above the three-compartment sink and under the counters at the front of the restaurant.
The order was given to eliminate the roaches.
More creepy, crawly, cockroaches were discovered at Brewingz, at 8150 Southwest Freeway.
There, health inspectors reported finding roach activity under the refrigerator by the kitchen fryer and ordered managers to eliminate the insects.
Moving right along, we found ourselves inside the Harvest Organic Grille on Fountainview Drive, where the Health Department found roaches on the floor in the food preparation area and also near the cold-hold refrigerator.

The eatery was ordered to undergo a re-inspection.
A restaurant worker told Channel 2 News that professional exterminators were brought in right away to fix the problem.
Up next, it was the Tomas Bakery at 1307 Yale St., where inspectors report finding both rodent droppings and cockroach activity.
We wrapped up this week’s report card with rat feces found at Taqueria Dona Maria at 2601 Navigation Blvd.
Inspectors found rat excrement on top of the dishwashing machine and also on the counter near the kitchen window.
Health inspectors ordered the restaurant to eliminate the rodents and clean up all fecal matter.
