Restaurant Report Card: Live roaches, rodents and slime

HOUSTON – Great coffee and donuts are what you expect at Dunkin’ Donuts, but slime in the ice machine? Not so much.

Still, Houston health inspectors found pink slime and black residue in the chute and under the ice maker at the Dunkin’ Donuts at 2330 Shepherd Road. Inspectors ordered all the ice to be thrown away and quarantined the machine.

Roaches -- just the word itself is enough to make your skin crawl, but that’s what inspectors found at China One at 7912 Long Point.

The inspectors found live roaches crawling on the cooking equipment, the walls, the floors, even on the vent hood above the cooking area. The restaurant was ordered to hire professional pest control to get rid of the problem.

Enchiladas, burritos and rodent droppings? At El Catrachito in the 7600 block of Dashwood, inspectors found rodent droppings on the floor, in the storage room and in the utensil area.

Schlotzsky’s is well known for its delicious, handmade sandwiches, but that doesn’t mean customers want their sandwiches made bare-handed. At the Schlotzsky’s at 4001 Richmond, health officials found one employee handling ready-to-eat deli meat with his bare hands. That is a big no-no.

And slime in the ice machine? That’s what inspectors found at the Nu Café at 9889 Bellaire. Owners there were ordered to trash the ice and scrub out the machine.

Finally, KPRC 2 News is honoring two local eateries with our coveted A+ rating this week. Alex and Marisela's Place at 1402 76th Street, and A Fare Extraordinaire at 2035 Marshall. Congratulations, guys, on your spotless inspections.
