Restaurant Report Card: Un-safe chicken, mildew, roaches found in Houston kitchens

HOUSTON – We start out this week on the Northwest side at The Backyard Café And Grill at 4410 Westway Park Blvd., where inspectors with the health department tossed out chicken that was deemed not safe for human consumption.

The chicken was trashed by inspectors for temperature violations.

No problems with the chicken at Chick-Fil-A at 2606 S. Kirkwood, but the ice, ah yes, the ice machine caught inspector’s attention.

They found black mildew inside the machine and ordered the staff to clean it out thoroughly.

Amaya’s Restaurant and Taqueria, located at 12468 Bellaire Blvs., is in the spotlight this week, and not in a good way.

There inspectors spotted a dead roach clinging to the kitchen wall.

Moving on, we head out to Joe’s Crab Shack at 2120 S. Highway 6, where inspectors found a roach in the kitchen food prep area.

Health inspectors told the crew to begin checking for insects and rodents on a routine basis.

And finally, how do you feel about boudin and dirty rice?

Oh yeah, those are two Cajun favorites that we love but they were found stored at unsafe temperatures at Burns Original Bar-B-Que on the Northside.

Inspectors tossed it in the trash and ordered the cooler quarantined until it can be fixed.

And this week, we want to the salute the folks at Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers.

They earn our coveted A-Plus award for knocking out a spotless restaurant inspection to go with their ultra-juicy hamburgers and creamy, light shakes.

So we say booo-yaaaah, we would never try to improooove-yaaaaah!
