Restaurant Report Card: Roaches infiltrate local kitchens

HOUSTON – It’s the holiday season, but there is nothing festive about cockroaches, especially when they are in the kitchen.

But nonetheless, Houston Restaurant Inspectors found them at the Lai Lai Dumpling House at 9262 Bellaire Boulevard.

Its inspection report notes seeing cockroaches on the wall in front of the hand washing sink and also in the reach-in freezer. The inspection ordered the restaurant to get rid of the cockroaches.

Our Restaurant Report Card traveled next to the Pizza Hut at 4835 Calhoun. It’s where the Health Department found 15 roaches in all stages of development around the restaurant’s water heater and cold hold food unit.

We move on now to Mojarra’s Seafood at 3327 Magnum Road. Here, inspectors found more roaches. In fact, inspectors ordered the restaurant to briefly close so pest control could be brought in to eliminate the problem.

The roach run down continues at Retta’s located at 3419 Liberty. It’s where health inspectors found, “live roach activity throughout the facility, both front and back of the house.”

The eatery was ordered to eliminate the pests.

And it just would not be a Restaurant Report Card without at least one case of “slime in the ice machine.”

Inspectors found slime at the Don Café Sandwich Shop at 9300 Bellaire Boulevard. Employees were ordered to throw out all the ice and thoroughly clean the ice machine.
