Restaurant Report Card: Food condemned due to unsafe storage temperatures

HOUSTON – When you eat out you demand certain things, like fresh foods that are safe to eat, for example.

But in this weeks’ Restaurant Report Card we found a lot of instances where restaurants have been storing the food they are about to serve at dangerously high temperatures.

At Denny’s, located at 12862 Northwest Freeway, health inspectors actually condemned 10 pounds of food being stored at unsafe, unhealthy temperatures.

There, they found chorizo, shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, spinach and diced ham, all deemed not safe for human consumption.

Same problem at The Backyard Café And Grill on Westway Park Boulevard.

There, the Houston Health Department discovered cooked rice and rice pilaf, about 15 pounds in all, being held at dangerous temperatures that could make people sick.

Those foods were thrown away immediately.

Our next stop is Senor Burritos, also located on Westway Park Blvd., where inspectors found beef fajitas, chicken, cooked pinto beans, pico de gallo, shredded cheese and guacamole, all stored at unsafe temperatures greater than 41 degrees.

In all the health department ordered that 50 pounds of that stuff be thrown away.

Moving on to Candelari’s Pizzeria on West Holcomb, restaurant inspectors here discovered black slime in the ice machine.

Managers were ordered to clean and maintain that machine and pitch the contaminated ice.

And at Berryhill, a Houston tradition located at 1201 W. 43rd Street, the health department found raw chicken and cooked rice not safe for human consumption.

Health officials ordering the owners to throw away 50 pounds of food.

And we wrap this week’s report card up with roaches at Shipley Donuts on Bingle Road.

At this doughnut shop inspectors reported spotting six live roaches located in the kitchen prep area, the utensil washing area and the hallway.

And McDonald’s does it again, this week our coveted A-Plus award goes out to the hard working, burger-making, vanilla-chocolate-and-strawberry-shaking crew at McDonald’s at 1405 Post Oak Boulevard.

They earn a perfect restaurant inspection and that gets them a Big Mac Boo-Yah!
