Residents near Addicks Reservoir start rebuilding after devastating storms

Residents in the Charleston Colony subdivision near the Addicks Reservoir have been cleaning up for the last week, trying to rebuild and get back to normal.

Charleston Colony Drive is lined with garbage from flood damage, including furniture, flooring and carpet and household items. Families said they just want to get back to normal after high waters swept through their neighborhood.

"We looked out here the whole street was like a river," John Black said.

"I was thinking, ‘What am I going to do when it comes in my house?'" Greg Barkley said.

When residents saw water coming up off the street into their homes, they knew it would be a long road to recovery. From pulling out flooring and carpet to cutting out drywall, it's taken a lot of money and work in a short amount of time.

"It ... seeped in and we are now replacing drywall and insulation in order to prevent mold from building up," Black said.

Barkley's garage was flooded and he lost all his work tools. The estimated damage is about $1,000. He said the water was about 3 feet in the middle of the street and 2 feet into homes.

"As far as getting back to normal, it's just a rebuilding thing. You just have to go through the steps," Barkley said.

Victoria Lee was in the house with her young family when hail hit her roof and caused several leaks. She also lost one of her cars to the high waters.

"All of the cars but two trucks got water in them. Our Scion was the worst; it had 2 feet of water up to the seat," Lee said.

She said her car works, at least for now, but she knows it will give out soon.

Neighbors said they are looking into getting flood insurance and hope the federal aid that Gov. Greg Abbott requested will soon kick in to pay for repairs.
