Remembering, honoring Buffalo Soldiers on Veterans Day

HOUSTON – The Buffalo Soldiers Museum was founded as a non-profit organization 17 years ago.

In 2008, they bought a building from the city of Houston and on Saturday, which is appropriately Veterans Day, they will finally realize their dream.

At 11:30 a.m. a ceremony will mark the grand opening of the museum.

Yes, it’s existed in this space for some time but now all floors of the building are fully renovated. Each one highlights the journey of African-Americans in the military service.

From the first recruits who were former slaves all the way up to the 21st century. All of this began as a retirement project for U.S. army veteran of the Vietnam War, Capt. Paul Matthews, and he couldn't be happier right now.

“This has been my dream come true. I thank the Lord every day, every morning that I rise it give me the opportunity to put together an exhibit that demonstrates the heritage of the African American soldier,” said Matthews, founder of Buffalo Soldier Museum.

The celebration is free and open to the public and will include guided tours, live music, giveaways and war re-enactments every half hour from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
