Red Cross opens new shelter in Hempstead

HOUSTON - The American Red Cross opened a shelter Thursday night for those who have been evacuated or need to leave their homes because of the flooding in the Houston area.

The 24-hour shelter is located at the First Baptist Church at 445 Main Street in Hempstead.

The shelter will providing a warm, dry place to stay, food and emotional support for area residents who are not able to remain at their homes.

To donate to Red Cross Disaster Relief visit or call 1-800-RED CROSS. Donations can also be given by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.  Donations to Disaster Relief are used to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters.
