Officials said a Precinct One deputy was on his way home from work when he pulled over into the right should emergency lane because he was not feeling well.

As the deputy stopped, a vehicle, driven by a suspected drunken driver, slammed into the back of the officer's personal car.

The deputy was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in serious condition.

Officials said the man driving the other vehicle and his female passenger were also taken to the hospital in stable condition. The district attorney's office has accepted intoxication assault charges for that man.

The southbound lanes of the North Freeway were closed for about two hours while emergency crews were on scene.

Officials said the injured deputy has worked in law enforcement for more than 30 years.
