The pony, who does not have a name that we're aware of, is eating and is "doing better," officials said.

The incident was reported about 11:30 a.m. near Simsbrook Drive and Hiram Clarke Road.

A Houston police officer at the scene said he was checking a truck parked on the street to see if it was stolen when he heard something behind him. He looked into the open storm drain and peeked inside.

“I thought it was a dog, so I jumped back because I thought the dog might be vicious,” the officer said. “So, then I went back over and I looked closer and I said, ‘It’s a horse.’”

Firefighters and animal experts responded to the scene and sedated the equine while they cut away the metal and concrete surrounding the storm drain before hoisting the pony to safety.
