Texas groups call for repeal of state's 'sanctuary cities' law

HOUSTON – Several groups on Tuesday called on Texas lawmakers to repeal the state’s new "sanctuary cities" law.

Texas Together, Pantsuit Republic and Mi Familia Vota held a news conference, where the groups detailed new estimates on the economic impact of Senate Bill 4.

The rule, which is also known as the "show me your papers" law, allows police to ask people their immigration status during traffic stops, and punishes sheriffs and police chiefs who refuse federal immigration hold requests.

Several Texas cities, including Houston, have filed a lawsuit that aims to stop the law.

Without an injunction, the law goes into effect Sept. 1.
