Police said he gave investigators a "alternate statement of events from those which he had given previously" about the disappearance of his daughter.

The Richardson Police Department announced Sunday afternoon it found the girl's body in a tunnel beneath a road and said it is "most likely" that of Sherin.

Police are waiting to positively identify the remains before confirming that the body is that of the 3-year-old girl who was reported missing earlier this month.

The medical examiner is working to determine a cause of death.

Authorities have not made a positive identification of the body.

An Amber Alert was issued for Sherin on Oct. 7, but was discontinued after authorities failed to find any leads in the investigation.

Wesley Mathews was arrested the day of her disappearance and charged with abandoning or endangering a child. He later posted bond.

Police said Mathews admitted he left his daughter in a backyard alley around 3 a.m. as a form of punishment for not drinking milk and when he returned 15 minutes later, she was gone.

Mathews told police he saw coyotes in the alley where he left his daughter.

He is being held at the Richardson City Jail on a $1 million bond.
