Police release sketch of suspect in slaying of Houston father

Man killed in driveway on May 5, police say

HOUSTON – Police released a sketch Wednesday one of the men believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a husband and father of two in west Houston four months ago.

The shooting happened about midnight May 5 at 3447 Unity Drive, near the intersection of Skyline Drive.

Police believe two to three men are responsible for the shooting. They are not sure if the man in the sketch was the shooter.

"One of the witnesses that is very credible that helped create this composite sketch, she was standing at a distance where she could see what was happening," Sgt. Anthony Turner, HPD Homicide, said. "We need this assistance, there was people out there that saw what happened. that haven't come forward."

According to Houston police, 35-year-old Tomas Gonzalez-Canil had just returned home after picking up dinner when he was shot to death in his driveway.

Gonzalez-Canil’s wife told investigators she heard at least three gunshots, police said.

Said she’s heard gunshots in her neighborhood before, but something told her to go outside this time. Gonzalez-Canil’s wife said she did not imagine her husband would be the victim.

He was the father to two children ages 4 and 9 years old.

Police described the gunman as Hispanic, in his 30s and about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

"If the killer does not pay here, God will make sure he pays big time," Gonzalez-Canil’s wife said. "They destroyed the life of two children. They left a 4- and 9- year-old without a father. A father who will no longer be there to hug them and watch them grow."

Anyone with information about Gonzalez-Canil’s death or who may recognize the man in the sketch is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
