Police: Officer feared for life, fired weapon

HOUSTON - A police officer fired his weapon only after a suspect pointed a gun at him, authorities say.

The incident unfolded in southeast Houston on Saturday at an apartment complex on Cullen Boulevard near Wanda Street.

Houston Police said two officers tried to pull over the driver of an older gold Buick Regal with an expired license.

Investigators said the driver drove to the back of the apartment complex and jumped out of his car and over a chain link fence. Police said he then pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at an officer.

A spokesperson said the officer feared for his life and fired his weapon. Police said the suspect took off and jumped into a black Chevy Impala on Cullen.

A second person who was in the Buick was arrested.

The officer who fired his weapon has been with the department for four years. He was on the standard three day administrative leave while the department investigated the shooting, officials said.
