HOUSTON - A mother has been accused of leaving her children alone in a car in southeast Houston.

Evon Vargas, 27, has been charged with child abandonment.

Houston police said the children, ages 6 and 10, were found in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Telephone Road near the Gulf Freeway about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said the car's windows were rolled down and it was raining.

Police said that when Vargas returned to the car about an hour later, she told them that she had gone to get gas. Detectives said there was gas in the car and the only gas can around was empty. She later changed her story, officials said.

Investigators said the car was left in an area close to a major roadway, where it could have been hit by another vehicle or the children could have been taken. The area also has a high risk of violence and narcotics are prevalent, officials said.

Vargas was booked into the Harris County Jail with bond set at $5,000.
