HOUSTON - A man attacked city workers with hammers and brandished a knife at police officers on Monday, according to authorities.

Friendswood police say they had to use tear gas and a taser to subdue Darron Lynn Koenig, 51.

It happened in the 400 block of Oak Vista.

Authorities said one worker told them Koening was throwing the hammers at them and had a knife. One contractor's hard hat took the blow from the hammer while another worker was hit in the arm, authorities said.

Koening barricaded himself in a tool shed at his residence when officers arrived on the scene, authorities said.

After two hours of talking with Koening, police officers said it appeared he was trying to light the shed on fire. That's when they said they decided to use tear gas and a taser to subdue him.

During the arrest, officers said Koenig brandished a knife at them.

Koenig was transported to the Friendswood City Jail and booked for three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault of a peace officer.

His bond is set at $160,000.
