One police officer got into the water and swam toward the animal while his colleagues formed a human chain down the bank of the canal in an effort to save the dog.

After several failed attempts, the officer in the water grabbed the dog and handed it off to the first person in line. The dog was then pulled to safety.

After shaking off the water, the dog ran away.
