Police: Drunken driver nearly hits officer, crashes BMW into police unit

HOUSTON - A driver was arrested Monday after he crashed into a Galveston police car, causing it to spin and hit another police unit. 

Galveston police said officers were diverting traffic away from a major accident that happened at the intersection of 51st Street and Avenue J around 7:35 p.m.

A red BMW traveling eastbound on Avenue J disregarded an officer directing traffic and nearly hit the him, said police. 

The BMW then went directly towards the accident scene and struck a police unit causing it to spin and hit a second police unit, said Galveston police. 

Sixty-six-year-old Raymond Oakley was driving the BMW, said police. Officers said Oakley was driving under the influence, and they also discovered several prescription narcotics in the car that did not belong to him. 

Police said he was arrested for driving while intoxicated, driving while license invalid and two counts of possession of a dangerous drug.
