Police: Dad forces son, 9, to live in box

GALVESTON, Texas - Children's Protective Services has custody of a 9-year-old boy who claims that he was forced to live in a wooden box.

Galveston County investigators said they learned of the allegations after the boy was reported missing on July 22.

After the boy was found, he told police that he ran away from home because he didn't want to be locked in his room.

Police got a search warrant and the boy's father, David Wieseckel, showed officers his son's room.

"They are some disturbing things that were found," said Lt. Michael Gray of the Galveston Police Department.

Detectives said the boy's room was an 8-feet by 6-feet box made of particle board. The box was in a laundry room and had a blanket and book inside.

Wieseckel admitted that his son was kept in a box and claimed it was so he wouldn't break things.

"There was a room that was built for him so he wouldn't damage windows, rooms, wood and everything else," Wieseckel said. "It was his bedroom. He had everything in there. He had blankets, a bed, everything, and he damaged it all, wrecked it all."

According to court documents, the boy was also physically abused by his father.

Investigators said they also found child pornography and five crack pipes in the home.

Wieseckel has relinquished his parental rights and the boy is in state custody. The boy's mother, Andrea Utley, lost custody of him in 2008 after being arrested on a drinking and driving charge. She lives in Wisconsin, but she's in Texas to fight for custody of her son.

"I was crushed," Utley said of learning about the allegations. "I was sick. I didn't know what to think."

Wieseckel has not been charged with a crime.

"I don't know why mom and dad are not being charged," Gray said. "That's a decision that is up to the Galveston County District Attorney's Office."

Utley said there is one thing, other than her son, that she wants.

"I want to see David go to jail."
