HOUSTON – A police chase in northwest Harris County ended with the suspect being killed in a motorcycle crash.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said the chase started when the Gulf Coast Major Offenders Task Force tried to serve an aggravated assault warrant for Darrick Shelton, 39, near the 2600 block of Spring Stuebner. Shelton fled from officers on a motorcycle at a high rate of speed, officials said.
"Absolutely no reason at all for him to believe that he wasn't being stopped by a fully licensed police officer," Capt. Darryl Coleman said. "The deputy was in full uniform and a fully-marked unit and on duty."
Shelton hit an SUV and lost control of his bike in the 2300 block of Spring Stuebner at 10 a.m. The SUV flipped over in a ditch.
Shelton was thrown off the motorcycle and hit a concrete culvert in a ditch, deputies said. He died at the scene.
According to court documents, Shelton had been accused of putting a gun to his girlfriend's head and threatening to kill her.
Shelton's criminal history included charges of evading arrest, aggravated assault and auto theft.
Emergency crews pulled one victim from the SUV. That person was taken to a hospital in The Woodlands, but their condition was not released.
A stretch of Spring Stuebner was closed to traffic while deputies investigated.
