Police: Car thieves on run after chase

Headline Goes Here

HOUSTON - Two car thieves are on the run after a police chase in southwest Houston.

Houston police said around 11 p.m. Wednesday, an officer spotted a driver suspected of making a traffic violation at Beechnut near Fondren. The officer ran the car's license plate, and it came back as stolen, police said. When the officer tried to pull the driver over, investigators said he took off.

The driver led police on a high-speed chase through several neighborhoods until the driver turned down a dead-end at Tanger and Pella Street, police said.

Detectives said the driver slammed the car into reverse and rammed the patrol car several times before two men inside the vehicle jumped out and took off on foot.

Both men ran through a bayou and into a nearby apartment complex, investigators said.

Police said that's where they lost track of the men. They said they think both men were involved in several aggravated robberies in the area. Descriptions of them have not been released.

The officer involved in the crash wasn't hurt.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
