Police ask public's help identifying man wanted in deadly 2015 shooting

Crime Stoppers offers $5,000 reward

HOUSTON – Houston police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man wanted in a deadly shooting on Oct. 10, 2015.

Houston police were called just before 3 a.m. to El Reventon night club in the 7300 block of Irvington.

Surveillance video showed a group of men arguing in a parking lot outside the club when Steven Skero, 33, began fighting with another man.

Police said toward the end of the fight a man showed up with a gun and shot Skero several times. Skero tried to run but collapsed, police said.

The shooter handed the gun to 31-year-old Hugo De La Cruz, police said.

A security guard reported that he saw De La Cruz firing the gun and when he ordered De La Cruz to drop the weapon he pointed it at the guard, police said.

The guard fired one his weapon one time, shooting De La Cruz.

Paramedics pronounced Skero and De La Cruz dead at the scene.

Police found De La Curz’s gun at the scene.

Surveillance video showed the shooter drive away in a black four-door full-size pickup truck with a silver truck box in the bed. Police believe he was waiting for De La Cruz and when he didn’t show up, the gunman left.

Police said during a news conference Monday that they used DNA and fingerprints taken from the scene but were not able to identify the gunman.

The shooting by the security guard was referred to a Harris County grand jury.

Crime stoppers is offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading the arrest of the shooter.
