Investigation underway after 2 vehicles exchange gunfire in SE Houston, police say

HOUSTON – A gun battle broke out at 11:20 a.m. Sunday between two groups of men in two vehicles, police said.

Houston police said multiple gunshots were exchanged between the occupants of a black Chevy Impala and a blue Ford pickup near the intersection of Griggs Road and Royal Palms Street in Southeast Houston.

Police said the gunfire shattered the back window of the pickup, which crashed into the rail platform for Metro’s Purple Line.

The line was shut down for several hours. Houston police SWAT Team members were called to the nearby Garden Oaks Apartment complex to search for the individuals involved in the shootout.

“Several suspects in a blue pickup truck were being followed by a Chevy Impala. They started exchanging gunfire with each other and the pickup crashed into the Metro Rail,” Houston police Executive  Assistant Chief Troy Finner said.

Police said they believe the gunfire was gang-related.

Police said one man in the pickup was shot in the neck inside. He was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

Police are searching for the Impala and the men who were inside it.
