Parents: Son, 14, slapped by students at teacher's request

HOUSTON – Parents of a child at Frank Black Middle School are outraged after they say their son was slapped by several students and that their son's teacher gave the order.

Skyler Norman said she was beside herself after her son, 14-year-old Gavin Norman, told her that he was assaulted at school.

"(I was) pretty upset. I was trying not to explode," said Skyler Norman. "That kind of rage, I don't know how to handle that. (I) want to cry, I want to scream, (I) don't know what to do."

"(They) were hitting me so hard that my glasses broke," said Gavin. "I had a knot on my head."

Gavin said it started when he was joking back and forth with his teacher. He said the teacher instructed the students in the classroom to get up and slap him.

"I was crying when they got done hitting me and teacher didn't do anything," said Gavin.

KPRC 2 reached out to the Houston Independent School District to find out if that was the case, and they sent us a statement that reads in part: "Four Black Middle School students were disciplined... A teacher who was in the classroom at the time of the incident also was reprimanded…. HISD Police conducted a thorough investigation and presented their findings to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, but charges were declined."

Gavin's parents said the investigation did not go far enough.

"They (HISD) have a codes of ethic, definitely a policy that they should follow and they haven't done any of that," said Black.

"We would want the teacher to be held accountable first and foremost," said Gavin's stepfather, Jaime Jaso. "Having the teacher continue his normal duties is a slap in the face. Our child's had to see him every day knowing that this guy betrayed him."

The family said they will seek legal advice before moving forward.
