Owner, 4 employees indicted in tow company scheme

HOUSTON – A Harris County grand jury has indicted the owner and four employees of a southeast Houston tow company and body shop for organized criminal activity.

The district attorney can now move forward with a criminal trial for all five suspects.

Richard Gonzalez hasn't spoke to media since his arrest in May, and he didn't testify before the grand jury before they indicted him Thursday morning.

The indictments stem from a Channel 2 investigation and customer's complaints that Gonzalez, along with his four employees, snared dozens of vehicles from the Houston freeways after accidents and tricked drivers into signing paperwork that resulted in thousands of dollars in fees, even when no work was performed.

Body shop manager Andres Vasquez disappeared before his first court appearance and is still on the run.

Employee Ruben Rendon is back in jail after a hit-and-run last month and failing to show up in court.

All five are scheduled to appear in court next week.

City council canceled the business's Safe Clear contract in May, but the body shop, USA Auto Collision Center, is still open for business.
