Out-of-state call leads to mother's arrest

HOUSTON - A call from his aunt in Virginia helped lead police to a 1-year-old boy who was seen on video having a bag placed over his head and then stuffed in his mouth. The child’s mother, who lives in Humble, was arrested and charged with child endangerment.

“She stuffed the bag in his mouth and he was throwing up,” said Ra'Neicha Broadnax, the boy’s aunt. “She burned him on his hands with cigarettes.”

Broadnax said when she saw video and pictures of her nephew, she called police in Humble. The boy’s mother, Jamelle Andrea Peterkin, lives in Humble. Broadnax said Humble police told her she first needed to call police in her hometown.

Broadnax then uploaded the video to Facebook, which prompted immediate responses.

“I want to say 30 minutes later, police departments from different states were calling me,” said Broadnax.

Harris County sheriff’s officials reported Precinct 4 deputy constables then checked on the boy at his day care and his mother was arrested. During an appearance before a magistrate, prosecutors said Peterkin took the video and pictures to send to her ex-boyfriend, the child’s father.

“She sent the pictures to her ex-boyfriend to disturb him,” a prosecutor told the judge.

Investigators said Peterkin admitted to what she did and told them she took the pictures and video 90 days ago and sent it to the child’s father to show him he did not care enough about their baby.

Peterkin posted a $15,000 bond and there was no answer at her apartment when we tried to speak with her. The child has been placed in the care of relatives.
