HOUSTON - One man was killed in a series of crashes on the highway early Sunday morning.
Police said around 3:30 a.m. a vehicle was headed eastbound on I-610 just past Ella Boulevard.
The car ran into the back of an Impala, which sent that car spinning, before eventually smashing into a Toyota.
The first vehicle then took off.
Investigators said the driver of the Toyota then got out of his car, complaining of head trauma, and lay down on the freeway.
"When they spun around, his drivers side is now facing against traffic, when he gets out he falls right there and he is impacted, and actually the impact dragged the vehicles a few feet farther," says Sgt. Karl Harris, Houston Police Dept.
While he was lying down, police said a driver in a Honda hit the man in the middle of the road and dragged the vehicles for several yards.
Investigators said the driver of the Honda was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The man who he hit died at the scene.
Another vehicle that was following the Honda, stopped when he saw his friend hit the man.
He stopped, got out of his car, and tried to run across the freeway to help.
That man was then hit by yet another passing vehicle. Medical responders transported him to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
While police were investigating these four separate crashes, another drunk driver smashed into a police vehicle on the scene.
He was taken into custody without any injuries.
