Off-duty officer stops attempted theft at storage facility in La Porte

LA PORTE, Texas – Two men were arrested Friday after an officer heading home from work noticed the men were attempting to rob a storage facility, according to the La Porte Police Department.

Police said an off-duty LPD detective was leaving work Friday when he noticed two suspicious vehicles meeting in a parking lot in the 11300 block of Spencer Highway. The officer decided to turn around and upon return noticed one of the vehicles had relocated to a mini storage unit across the street, according to department officials.

The officer notified patrol units that the vehicle had entered a gate not normally used at the storage facility, investigators said. An on-duty LPD officer later arrived when the vehicle was hooked to a trailer carrying a mid-sized tractor.

Meanwhile, a third officer spoke with the driver of the second vehicle as it was parked near the airport along Spencer Highway.

Houston residents David Regino, 31, and Maderrick Waldrup, 41, were both arrested. Both men were charged with felony theft and booked at the Harris County Jail.
