Off-duty constable on motorcycle hits car on Northwest Freeway

HOUSTON – An off-duty constable on his motorcycle hit a car on a northwest Houston freeway Tuesday.

Investigators said Polk County Precinct 3's constable ran into the back of a truck in the eastbound lanes of Highway 290 at Huffmeister Road at 7:25 a.m.

The constable was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Many of his colleagues went to the hospital to offer support to his family.

Polk County officials said the constable is a husband and father.

All eastbound lanes of Highway 290 were shut down for an hour during the investigation. The scene was cleared by 8:30 a.m. and all lanes were reopened.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
