HOUSTON - The principal of a Houston elementary school has decided to cancel a gun safety program for students that was scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon, just days before The National Rifle Association convention begins in Houston.

Peck Elementary School will not participate in a gun safety program for students that was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon because a district spokesperson said that the school's principal doesn't want to be "perceived as taking sides in the gun control debate." The elementary school's principal is Carletta Brown.

Much of the funding for Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program is made possible through NRA Foundation grants from monies raised by Friends of NRA, according to a press release.

A similar program at Martin Luther King Early Childhood Center for Wednesday has also been canceled.

The national meeting of the NRA will take place in Houston May 3 through 5.
