Newsmakers Extra: Making It Better for children learning to read

HOUSTON – Only one of  300 kids living in low-income housing has a book at home.

Houston City Council Member Jerry Davis saw that statistic and founded the Making it Better organization with the goal of narrowing the achievement gap between the haves and have-nots in our community.

Jacque Daughtry, the executive director of Making it Better, tells Khambrel Marshall on Houston Newsmakers Extra that 93 percent of the students they serve live in low-income areas and 51 percent live live in single-parent households.

Almost 80 percent of students helped were able to move up at least one grade level in reading. Daughtry talks about the many other ways Making it Better is helping  students and parents and how you can help.

Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall, airs every Sunday morning at 10 a.m. right after "Meet the Press" on KPRC Channel 2.
