New program creates food truck for low-incomes families, seniors in Houston

HOUSTON – The YWCA has opened its new food panty, created Friday to assist low-income families and the seniors in the Meals on Wheels Program.

Senior citizens can come to their new facility to have meals and socialize at the same time.

The YWCA will continue its traditional Meals on Wheels Program, it delivers meals to homebound seniors.

Between the two programs, they serve about 1,700 people a day. This is made possible through both paid staff and many volunteers

“For many of our seniors, the only person they see a day is our drivers,” said Rhonda James, the director of programs at YWCA. “So when we get volunteers to come in here -- whether it's through our program -- they come back in here and deliver meals (and) we welcome those opportunities.”

The YWCA also has a new temperature-controlled truck to deliver meals, so the food stays nice and warm.
