PEARLAND, Texas - Smoke and flames could be seen shooting out of apartment windows during an apartment fire in Pearland.

Cell phone video captured heavy flames and thick smoke billowing out of the downstairs window at the Royal Oaks Apartments on East Broadway.

Pictures and video started pouring in from Local 2 viewers who witnessed the blaze.

"In one of these it is like there is someone standing there," said neighbor Bryan Young.

In a photograph captured by Young, you could see how intense the flames were.

"When I came out, there was yelling, people came out to look. At that point people knew what was going on," said Young.

Fire officials said a mother and her three children were getting ready for school, when a fire sparked in a bedroom closet at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday

"It started in the closet and she tried to throw water on it, but the water wouldn't work," Young said.

An 11-year-old boy and several neighbors went door to door warning people of the flames.

"I heard a knock on the door and they told everybody to evacuate so they came and got my out of bed, got my pants on and everything and left," said neighbor Odell Harwell.

The fire spread through the walls and floors of the apartment causing three other units to burn. Four units were severely damaged, but everyone was able to get out OK.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
