KEY WEST, Fla. - The Navy's newest destroyer, the USS Spruance, is expected to arrive in Key West on Friday ahead of its formal commissioning ceremony Oct. 1.
The ship is named in honor of Adm. Raymond Spruance, commander of Carrier Task Force 16 during the Battle of Midway in World War II.
Onboard the ship are Tomahawk cruise missles, a 5-inch gun, sonar systems and two helicopters.
Spruance can reach speeds up to 30 knots and is powered by four gas-turbine engines.
It wil be open for public tours this Saturday and Sept. 30.
