Man showed early signs of dementia

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Police in Bakersfield, California say an elderly man who was fatally shot by officers early Monday morning did not have a gun at the time of the shooting.

Francisco Serna, 73, was shot and killed just outside of his home.

His son, Frank Serna, says his father would take walks around the neighborhood quite frequently. He had been showing early signs of dementia and was on medication.

Police said around 12:30 a.m. officers received a call about a man who was carrying and showing a handgun. Police also said the man was not complying to their requests.
