Sarasota Planned Parenthood evacuated after reports of substance inside

Several people hospitalized, some complained of shortness of breath

SARASOTA, Fla. – According to the Sarasota Police Department, the Planned Parenthood Central Avenue was evacuated after an unknown substance was found inside the building.

The nearby Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences was placed on locked down but officials said the children are safe.

Some inside the Planned Parenthood reported experiencing a shortness of breath, WFLA reported.

Officials said six people were taken to the hospital for evaluation. There were about 38 people inside the building when the substance was found. According to the Fire Department, everyone will be decontaminated on scene. 

Officials do not know what the substance is that made people ill.

Rochelle Tafolla, a spokesperson with a local Planned Parenthood, said they are following all security measures.

"I am aware of the situation in Florida and hope everyone is safe. Our Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast health centers and buildings are open. We are following all security precautions to ensure everyone's health and safety, “ she said in  release.
