Move over Hamburglar: Texans called out for Whataburger marker thefts

Police said it had recovered more markers than the restaurant possessed

KRUGERVILLE, Texas – Do you steal the order number markers at Whataburger? Apparently, it’s a thing people do. But it’s still a crime, as one Texas police department reminded people after officers recovered a “large quantity” of the markers.

The Northeast Police Department in Krugerville, Texas -- a city about 50 miles northeast of Dallas -- said in a now-viral Facebook post: “We have learned that it has become a game for area teens to be removing the plastic ‘order numbers’ from the restaurant when in attendance. Removing these items without consent is a theft, which could result in a citation being issued for theft of property under $100.00.”

The police department added that it became an apparent problem when the department possessed more order numbers than the restaurant did.

The post has been shared nearly 6,000 times and has more than 1,900 reactions.

In the comments on the post, many had suggestions and thoughts on the Whataburger find.

Facebook user - Matthew Harrington - wrote, “Police department just trying to get that honey butter chicken biscuit hook up.”

Another person, Dawn Caesar, asked how they were lost in the first place. She wrote, “I thought the employees were supposed to take the number when handing the patrons their food?”

Another, Theresa Morrell, suggested the company avoid the issue altogether. “(The) company could make cardboard ones for customers to keep, like Burger King’s crowns and Long John Silver’s hats. That could help prevent people from stealing the ones (the) company needs.”
