More Texans will be traveling Labor Day weekend

HOUSTON – If you plan on traveling for Labor Day weekend, you are going to have plenty of company.

AAA Texas projects nearly 2.5 million Texans will spend the holiday away from home. That's a 4.1 percent increase from last year.

Traveling by all modes of transportation is predicted to increase this Labor Day compared to last, but driving will still be the most popular among travelers. AAA Texas said 2.1 million Texans will be traveling by car; 222,000 will be traveling by plane; and 160,000 have chosen other methods of travel, such as trains, buses and cruise ships.

According to AAA Texas, the largest share of travelers will leave for their trips on Friday. The most popular date of return will be Monday.

The anticipated increase in holiday travel is predominantly due to increased consumer spending and the improving housing market. As home prices rise in many parts of the country, more families feel comfortable about traveling this Labor Day.
