Mom gives back by donating blood

HOUSTON - One Pearland woman began donating blood not knowing one day both her children would have to receive the gift of life.

Keri Oujesky is no stranger to rolling up her sleeves to give blood. The first time she donated blood, her motivation was not unlike many others.

"I used to donate back in college, and that was like come in and get a free T-shirt," she said.

Years later she became a mom to Josi, now 7 and Luke, who is 4.

When Josi was born in 2005, she needed open-heart surgery at just 5 days old and received two units of blood by the time she was 2 months old. It saved her life.

Luke was also born with a heart defect. He, too, underwent open heart surgery, needing precious units of blood as well.

Oujeskynow has a new appreciation for blood donors and is thankful her kids are happy and healthy because of the generosity of others.

More than 1,000 donations are needed every day for kids like Josi and Luke, as well as cancer patients, people who are anemic and preemies.

Donation only takes an hour and the benefits are vast.

KPRC Local 2 is holding a blood drive. Donations can be made at the KPRC Local 2 studios between 6 a.m. and noon Thursday.
