Mexico nightclub shooting survivor returns home to Houston

HOUSTON – A Houston man who survived a deadly shooting at a a nightclub in a popular tourist spot in Mexico is home recovering Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened early Monday morning at the BPM Music Festival in Playa Del Carmen, sending club goers running into the street.

Dozens of people were injured, including Houston native Ignacio Valencia, who was shot twice.

He arrived back in the city Monday night at Bush Intercontinental Airport, where he and his relatives embraced for an emotional reunion.

Although Valencia said he is thankful to be alive, he said he is still reliving the nightmare.

"It's like a nightmare I can't wake out of," Valencia said. "Just thinking of that moment. I can't sleep since I've gotten all of this. I don't know how to handle it right now. I'm just here and grateful."

Alejandra Villanueva, 18, was the only American among the five killed in the attack.

Villanueva, who was vacationing from Colorado, was killed in the stampede as people ran to escape the festival.

Investigators said the gunman, who is still on the loose, allegedly opened fire after being denied entrance into the club.
