Search for 2 accused car thieves called off near Sugar Land airport

Man ran from officers after vehicle stop, police say

HOUSTON – Two men ran from the scene of a vehicle stop and onto airport property Tuesday afternoon in Sugar Land, authorities said.

According to Sugar Land police, officers tried to stop a vehicle bearing a stolen license plate on Highway 6, but the driver sped away. After a short chase, the driver and another person jumped out of the car and ran onto the property of the Sugar Land Municipal Airport.

Police said a perimeter was established at the wetlands area on the south side of the airport.

"They crashed through a gate over into the other side of the runway. They drove behind a hangar, and into a swampy, wooded area. They got stuck in the mud, jumped out of the truck, ran into the woods and haven't been seen since," Doug Adolph, Sugar Land police spokesperson, said.

The search has since been called off.
