Man wanted after escaping custody at hospital

HOUSTON - Authorities are searching for a man who they say escaped police custody while being treated at a Houston hospital.

The Harris County Precinct 7 Constable's Office is searching for John Wesley Adams, 41, who was last seen at Ben Taub General Hospital on Saturday.

Officials said Adams was arrested after he led officers on a chase on Belfort Avenue near Scott Street around 1:30 a.m. During the chase, officials said Adams was speeding and ran several stop signs before he was hit by another vehicle. He lost control of the pickup truck and crashed into two parked cars.

The constable's office said Adams tried to run from authorities, but could not because he was injured in the crash.

Adams was arrested and taken by ambulance to Ben Taub General Hospital.

The constable's office said Adams escaped while at the hospital.

Authorities describe Adams as 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds.

Adams has an extensive criminal history, which includes arrests for evading, drug possession and injury to a child.
