Man charged after taking hostage, shooting at police from motel room

HOUSTON – A man is facing charges after he fired shots at officers Thursday morning while holding a woman against her will, authorities said.

Oliver Q. Martinez, 39, is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant and being a felon in possession of a weapon.

The Houston Police Department was called around 2 a.m. to the Baron Inn Motel at 4823 W. 34th St. in northwest Houston on reports of a man holding at least one person against her will.

Officers believed that the man was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun.

Police said that when officers knocked on the door to the room, Martinez fired several shots at them through the door.

No officers were hit. They retreated and took cover.

One bullet grazed the leg of a man who was in a room next to the standoff, police said. His leg was bandaged and he is expected to be OK.

Police said Martinez refused to come out of the room, and SWAT officers negotiated with him. Police said he fired more shots at officers during negotiations.

Police said the man let his female hostage go around 4:45 a.m.

SWAT officers deployed tear gas into the room, and Martinez eventually surrendered. He was arrested and charged.

HPD briefing on standoff.
