Man seen on camera stealing Toys for Tots donation jar

HOUSTON – He was not a customer.

The man that walked into the UPS store on Highway 6 in west Houston on Tuesday was captured on surveillance video stealing donations.

The blonde-haired man wearing a black hat with black and red shorts sporting an arm tattoo, was in and out of the store in 10 seconds.

The video shows a female accomplice holding the door open for him as he bypassed an employee helping a customer. The man walked straight to the Toys for Tots donation jar, snatched it and left.

“The person who walked in knew exactly where the box was so he had been to this store before,” said store manager Raj Patel.

Patel said there might have been anywhere from $60 to $80 in the container. The money was slated for the Toys For Tots literacy program.

The program helps provide books and toys for children in need. Patel wondered whether the man and his accomplice must have had a greater need if they stole from children.

“You can’t need more than what the kids require,” Patel said. “This is a donation. Had he asked me for $20 I would have given it to him.”

Staff Sgt. Andrade with Houston’s Toys for Tots program said the theft was disheartening because there is a greater need this year due to all the families impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

The pair have not been caught.

Patel said the Houston Police Department is investigating.
