Man put in jail for public intoxication found dead next morning, police say

BAYTOWN, Texas - A 37-year-old man who was booked into jail for public intoxication late Tuesday was found dead in his cell the next morning, according to the Baytown Police Department.

Police said as Jose Alfredo Garcia of Weslaco was found to be intoxicated on an unknown substance at the TA Truck Stop at 6800 Thompson Road.

Officers said he was put in an observation cell where he fell asleep. Baytown detention officers reported that the man stopped breathing shortly after 8 a.m. Police said staff tried to revive him but first responders pronounced him dead at 8:39 a.m.

According to police, Garcia complied with officers and there were no altercations during the arrest or booking process.

An autopsy will be performed to determine Garcia's cause of death.
